Dwarf Minke Whale – were first recognized as a distinct species in the 1980s. still little is known about their biology or their migration paths. Between May and October they are seen in the Northern GBR, with 80% of sightings in the months of June and July. Whether this reflects the true abundance of the Whales or only part of the population is unknown. Most of the Whales encountered by vessels are less than 6 metres long, indicating hey are most likely to be juveniles or just maturing. Adults are expected to reach up to 8 metres. Their life span is unknown with other Minke Whale species living for 50 to 60 years. Seen in Antarctic waters through December to March, feeding on pelagic Lantern Fish and krill, Dwarf Minke Whales have never been seen on the Northern GBR. Most sightings are of single Whales, however groups of up to 12 have been recorded at a few Reef locations during peak season. With little known about their basic biology, behaviour, and migration, research requires strict park management to heavily control interactions between humans and Whales, ensuring their ecological sustainability. However, the Dwarf Minke Whale is extremely inquisitive, regularly approaching boats, divers, and snorkelers. Taka and a few other commercial boats offer ‘voluntary approach’ interactions where guests are invited to collect research data which is then submitted to the local James Cook University
